Low-calorie breakfast ideas
Updated October 11, 2026 · MyPlate
A breakfast under 400 kcal is a sum you can check. One cup of oatmeal cooked with water (166 kcal) plus one large raw egg (72 kcal) is 238 kcal. The ideas below use only USDA FoodData Central servings from our chart, and each line shows the addition. Nothing here is a guessed restaurant meal.
Breakfast ideas on the web often list a calorie count with no portion and no database ID. That number cannot be audited. These can. Every food is a row we fetched on 11 October 2026. If you change the amount, scale from the grams on the food chart rather than inventing a new total. The cap of 400 kcal is the search phrase people use. It is not a required breakfast size. Your day still has to fit the target from the calorie calculator.
Ideas under 400 kcal
| Breakfast | Sum | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cup cooked oatmeal (166, FDC 173905) + 1 large raw egg (72, FDC 171287) | 238 kcal | 5.9 + 6.3 = 12.2 g |
| 100 g plain nonfat Greek yogurt (61, FDC 330137) + 100 g strawberries (32, FDC 167762) | 93 kcal | 10.3 + 0.7 = 11.0 g |
| 2 large raw eggs (144) + 1 slice whole-wheat bread (81, FDC 172688) | 225 kcal | 12.6 + 4.0 = 16.6 g |
| 1 large hard-boiled egg (78, FDC 173424) + 1 medium banana, 118 g (105, FDC 173944) | 183 kcal | 6.3 + 1.3 = 7.6 g |
| 100 g cottage cheese, 2% (84, FDC 328841) + 1 medium tomato (22, FDC 170457) | 106 kcal | 11.0 + 1.1 = 12.1 g |
| 1 thin slice toasted white bread (49, FDC 174925) + 2 tbsp peanut butter (191, FDC 172470) | 240 kcal | 1.5 + 7.1 = 8.6 g |
| 1 cup oatmeal (166) + 100 g Greek yogurt (61) + 140 g Fuji apple (91, FDC 1750340) | 318 kcal | 5.9 + 10.3 + 0.2 = 16.4 g |
The Fuji apple row is 140 g and 91 kcal, from energy factor data on that Foundation food. It is not a generic "medium apple" from a different record. The toasted white bread is one thin slice, 17 g, 49 kcal, not a thick untoasted slice. The whole-wheat row is one slice, 32 g, 81 kcal. Use the row that matches the bread you have. The slice itself is on calories in bread.
One morning written out
Oatmeal, an egg, and coffee. Oatmeal 166 kcal, egg 72 kcal, brewed coffee 2 kcal per cup (FDC 171890). The sum is 240 kcal before milk. If you add 100 g whole milk, the chart says 60 kcal (FDC 746782), and the cup is 300 kcal. Protein is 5.9 g from the oatmeal, 6.3 g from the egg, and 3.3 g from 100 g of whole milk, which is 15.5 g. That is a modest protein breakfast. If you want more protein without much carbohydrate, the Greek yogurt row is the denser choice: 10.3 g protein in 61 kcal per 100 g.
None of these ideas is a full day's protein. An adult target is discussed on how much protein per day. Lunch and dinner still have to be logged. If you skip breakfast for a 16:8 window, you do not need a breakfast calorie count at all. You need the same daily total.
Common mistakes
- Using a "cup of oatmeal" that was the dry grain. Our row is cooked with water, 234 g, 166 kcal.
- Counting a fried egg as 72 kcal. The 72 kcal figure is the large raw egg. Frying adds fat that is not in FDC 171287. We do not publish a fried-egg calorie on this site because we did not fetch one.
- Adding honey, juice, or a second spoon of peanut butter and keeping the heading "under 400" without adding the new calories.
- Treating 400 kcal as the goal even when your TDEE says the day needs a different shape.

Frequently asked questions
What is a breakfast under 400 calories?
Any combination whose USDA servings add up to under 400 kcal. This page only uses foods from our FoodData Central chart and shows the sum.
How many calories are in oatmeal and an egg?
One cup of oatmeal cooked with water is 166 kcal (FDC 173905). One large raw egg is 72 kcal (FDC 171287). Together they are 238 kcal.
What is a higher-protein option?
Nonfat Greek yogurt, 100 g, is 10.3 g protein and 61 kcal (FDC 330137). Add 100 g strawberries, 32 kcal and 0.7 g protein (FDC 167762), for 93 kcal and 11.0 g protein.

Yes, if you count it. Two tablespoons are 191 kcal (FDC 172470). On toast that may still be under 400 kcal, and it is no longer a tiny breakfast.
Are these meals complete?
They are examples under a calorie cap. Your full day still has to meet the target from the calorie calculator, including protein.
Do I have to eat breakfast?
No. If you use a 16:8 window you might skip it. The calorie total of the day is the part that decides weight change.
